How Do You Care For Pearls?

Posted By Tracy Hyde, Jewellery Designer, 02 November 2024

Pearls are easy to care for in the main. It’s more about what not to do with them. ‘Real’ pearls are those gems which have been cultured, or those which are natural. There are lots of imitation pearls around too, and it’s helpful to know which is which…but that’s another story.

Natural Pearls vs Cultured Pearls

If you have a natural pearl, you’re incredibly fortunate to own it! Natural pearls are rarely found these days. Many of them are owned by the very wealthy and by royalty, and they carry a very hefty price tag. Cultured pearls, however, are a much more affordable way to possess these beautiful gemstones. Cultured pearls come in many different qualities, so I would say buy the best you can afford.

Tips For Your Pearl Care

Take a look at some of my tips for looking after your pearls, keeping them at their best:

  1. Wear your pearls. Your natural oils will keep them moisturised – they need a little moisture. All pearls need for cleaning is a wipe down with a soft damp cloth. You don’t need anything at all on it, just water.
  2. They will need restringing from time to time if they are strung on silk. Buy them with the expectation you’ll need to do this.
  3. Store them in a soft fabric-lined box away from your other jewellery which could scratch them. Very dry atmospheres and heat sources can cause pearls to dry out and crack. Remember, they need moisture from the air.
  4. Don’t swim in them, either in the pool or sea, don’t leave them on to bathe or shower, and if you have a pearl ring, take it off to wash your hands.
  5. Don’t spray your pearls with products, or allow creams to sit on the surface of the pearl. If you’re like me and use perfume and lotions daily, wait until it has all dried or been absorbed (around 30 minutes or so) before wearing them.

It seems a lot to remember, but this way you will get the longest life out of your gemstones, and they’ll continue to dress up your days and evenings for years.
