To celebrate International Women's Day 2022 we are shining a light on our fabulous members and their stories.

Each and every single one of them has an inspiring story about starting their own business. So read on to find out more.

Rukmini Patel, owner of Rukmini Patel - Interior Design

What first drew you to starting your business?

I was working in banking and felt very drained from working in a harsh environment. I came to the realisation that this would never change and I needed to find a way out. I’ve always been drawn to setting up my own business and had a creative streak with interior design. I really believed I could make it work and had decided to take the plunge, although I feel like the universe made me! At the time it was all or nothing and so I set up my business and completed several courses in interior design.

What is the best thing about being your own boss?

The best thing is being able to choose who I work with and work with projects that are within my niche knowing I can make a real difference. I also think setting up your own rules, choosing when you work and how is a real bonus. And being able to learn about the subjects you actually want to learn makes work far more enjoyable!

What's your advice to other women going into business?

Hone in on your niche and be specific about it. This may take time to figure out what you like and dislike, which is all part of the process.

What is your top tip for success?

If something doesn’t work, find another avenue. Avoid comparing yourself to your peers. Work with clients who bring you joy!
