To celebrate International Women's Day 2022 we are shining a light on our fabulous members and their stories.

Each and every single one of them has an inspiring story about starting their own business. So read on to find out more.

Debbie Gilbert, owner of Best Businesswomen Awards

What first drew you to starting your business?

After leaving my corporate career to spend more time with my son, I wasn’t sure what I would do next. My father was then diagnosed with early-onset dementia, which meant I needed the flexibility to cope with the demands of caring for him and my son. Starting my own business seemed the obvious solution.

Back in 1998 the internet was in its infancy, and social media was not even a term, so starting a business then was much harder than today. But I waded through the challenges and now, almost 25 years later, have built a successful business; I have won awards, have a podcast, The Business Awards Show, own my own awards The Best Businesswoman Awards and have written an Amazon Bestselling book ‘The Successful Mumpreneur’!

Sometimes I have to pinch myself that I have created all of this!

What is the best thing about being your own boss?

At the top of my list is flexibility. Sadly, my parents have died, and my children are grown up, so I don’t need the same level of flexibility as I once needed. But I value it so much. So, if I want to take a day off in the week to visit an exhibition or go off on holiday I can. I am always in charge of my decisions and have created a business that is bespoke to me and my needs.

What's your advice to other women going into business?

Do your research carefully and get expert advice? Do not rush this process. The research you do is crucial. Check the market and do proper market research, so do not rely on friends and family. Review your competitors and get a clear understanding of their offerings—research pricing, trends, and websites. Get an expert to help you develop a brand, logo, and a good website; investing in this will pay dividends.

What is your top tip for success?

Networking is vital to grow awareness of your business and to gain expert help and advice. I joined WIBN in 2005 and never regretted that decision. It's been pivotal to the success of my business. I have gained so many connections and so much business. Plus, it’s been gratifying working with others and supporting them. A solid network is vital to being successful in business.

Tell us something about yourself we might not expect?

I was in a world recording-breaking tap-dancing session at the BBC in 1978, which was filmed and can still be found on YouTube with Roy Castle. Unfortunately, we all look the same, so even I can’t spot myself!
