Don't Call It A Midlife Crisis

Midlife crisis, 40 or 50 year itch, the menopause effect we’ve all heard people say these things. It’s usually about women and it’s usually said in a negative way.

So, what is it about midlife women having a ‘midlife crisis’ that gives them such a negative reputation. Maybe it’s because it isn’t a midlife crisis, but a midlife awakening!

Invisible Woman Syndrome

There is something that happens to women when they reach midlife, they can become invisible.

“This is the social phenomenon dubbed 'invisible woman syndrome', where women in their 40s and 50s disappear from public view – in shops, on public transport, at work and in television and film.”

This is believed to be for a number of different reasons. Women in midlife typically begin to go through the menopause which means changes to their bodies. Their role as a mother has often changed as children fly the nest and their career may have reached a plateau as they are overlooked at work.

However, there is a new movement that is empowering midlife women to embrace this time in their lives and use it as a catalyst to change - for the better!

Not A Midlife Crisis, But A Midlife Awakening

There is an increasing number of high-profile midlife women speaking up and bucking the trend for invisible women.

Sunday Times editor for 23 years Eleanor Mills was dismissed from her role just as she was reaching 50. After the shock of her public dismissal she spearheaded a movement to help other women to ‘step into their collective power’.

Noon is an online platform mixing activism and education for midlife women.

Embrace The Change

Typically seen as a negative thing, the change that happens in midlife is a brilliant opportunity to make positive changes.

Many midlife women enjoy the freedom of financial stability and less family responsibility. This coupled with the physical changes of menopause can ignite an urge for adventure, new challenges and a freer, happier life.

If you are caught up in a negative home or work life then it’s the perfect time to reassess.

  • Stuck in a job you hate - explore a new career.
  • Feeling trapped by your home or possessions - de-clutter, downsize and change your scenery.
  • Unfulfilled and bored - try something new, travel or do something just to make you happy.

The Freedom Of Self-Employment

Many midlife women start a journey of self-employment at this time in their lives. That business or project that they always wanted to embark on is suddenly more important than ever. They have the time, security, wisdom and ambition to make it work.
