The power of women's networking

            Twenty years ago, in 2005, the Women in Business Network (WIBN) opened its doors with a bold vision, to create a space where women in business could connect, collaborate and truly thrive.

                What started as a small but passionate community has grown into one of the UK’s most respected and supportive women’s networking organisations, touching the lives of thousands of women over the years.

                From the very beginning, WIBN’s ethos was clear. It wasn’t about pitching to one another or competing for attention.

Instead, it was about developing genuine, long-term relationships built on the “Know, Like and Trust” principle. It was, and still is, a place where women can confidently share their business, knowing they will be heard, supported and valued.

Structured networking that really WORKS!

                The structure of a WIBN meeting has remained consistent over the years and for good reason.

Women appreciate a clear, well-paced format where everyone gets their moment to speak. Rather than fighting to get a word in or feeling they’re being sold to, members know they will have their turn in their Monthly Minute.

                Members can showcase their business in the Spotlight Session, where their business is centre stage. It’s their opportunity to share their story, explain what they do and help others understand how to
                refer opportunities their way.

Meetings also include a Business Topic segment, where members can share their expertise and learn something new from each other.

This is followed by Let’s Talk Business, where every member and visitor get the chance to speak about another woman in the room, celebrating her work, building stronger relationships and reinforcing the
                trust that sits at the heart of WIBN.

Over 100 groups around the UK

Today, WIBN proudly supports over 1,000 members and has welcomed thousands more visitors over the years. The network has grown to 21 franchisees across the UK, and over 100 groups with even more groups in the pipeline, each carrying forward the same supportive, collaborative
            ethos that has been its hallmark since day one.

As WIBN has grown, so too has its membership offering. Members now have access to free training sessions, including Monthly Minute, Networking Strategy and Spotlight Masterclasses, helping them make the most of their networking time. There are
            also free monthly Let’s Talk online sessions, giving members the chance to speed network across the whole network and build connections far beyond their local group.

For those whose location isn’t a factor in their business, our National Online meetings offer the opportunity to connect with WIBN members

Professional and personal connections

Beyond formal meetings, WIBN members also enjoy social events and supportive WhatsApp groups, ensuring no one is ever alone in their business journey.

The result is a strong, vibrant network where women can grow their confidence, expand their connections and achieve success in a way that feels natural and empowering.

As WIBN celebrates its 20th anniversary, it’s not only a time to reflect on the journey so far but also to celebrate the incredible women who have been part of it.

Their collective energy, commitment and support has shaped WIBN into what it is today, a place where women in business are not just networking, but building genuine relationships that last a lifetime.

How to Prepare for Your First WIBN Meeting

Attending your first Women in Business Network (WIBN) meeting can feel both exciting and a little daunting. WIBN offers a unique, supportive environment where women in business connect, collaborate and grow. Whether you’re an experienced networker
            or completely new to the concept, a little preparation can go a long way in helping you make the most of your first meeting and more to come.

Here’s some tips to ensure you’re fully prepared and confident:

1. Understand the Format

WIBN meetings follow a structured agenda designed to maximise opportunities for all members and visitors. Expect introductions, a member spotlight presentation, a business topic discussion, plenty of time to connect over brunch or lunch and of
            course lots of networking. Part of being a WIBN member, we offer a monthly online Monthly Minute Masterclass session to help you master this part of the meeting so you can enjoy your time with us.

During the meeting, every attendee has 60 seconds to introduce themselves and their business. To make the most of this, craft your introduction in advance. Consider including:

Your name and business name.

What your business does.

Who your ideal client or referral is.

A specific example of how you’ve helped a client recently.

A clear call to action (e.g., "If you know someone struggling with X, I’d love an introduction!").

Practice your 60 seconds to ensure it fits comfortably within the time limit and stays as close to one minute as possible. This will help you deliver your introduction confidently and naturally.

2. Research the Group

As a WIBN member or visitor, before the meeting you will receive a lead sheet of all attendees. Understanding the attendees can help you tailor your 60 seconds and identify potential collaborations. WIBN groups are diverse, including professionals,
            entrepreneurs and business owners from various industries.

You might also want to explore WIBN’s ethos and values. WIBN meetings are all about supportive networking, so come prepared to listen, learn, and share generously.

3. Bring the Essentials

To make a great first impression, ensure you’re prepared with the following:

Lead Sheet and Pen: The lead sheet would have been sent to you prior to the meeting and will include contact details for each attendee, you can use it to add notes.

A Positive Mindset: Approach the meeting with an open mind and a willingness to engage.

4. Dress for Success

WIBN meetings are professional yet relaxed. Choose an outfit that reflects your personal brand while ensuring you feel comfortable and confident.

5. Monthly Minute

This is your time to shine. Even if you’re nervous, remember that everyone in the room has been in your shoes. Focus on:

Speaking clearly and confidently.

Making eye contact with attendees.

Ending with a smile and a sincere thank you.

Pro tip: Tailor your introduction to include a story or anecdote that makes your introduction memorable. People are more likely to connect with stories than facts alone.

If you are a WIBN Member try to attend our Monthly Minute Masterclass, you will find this useful for all future meetings.

6. Prepare Questions

Think about questions you can ask other attendees to learn more about their businesses and build meaningful connections. Some examples include:

“What inspired you to start your business?”

“What’s a recent challenge you’ve overcome?”

“What’s your ideal referral?”

7. Follow Up After the Meeting

After the meeting, take time to review your notes and reach out to the people you connected with. Send a friendly email or connect on LinkedIn to thank them for their time and explore potential collaborations.

Your first WIBN meeting is an opportunity to step into a vibrant community of like-minded women who are invested in each other’s success. By preparing ahead of time and engaging fully, you’ll
            not only make a great impression but also start building lasting relationships.

Remember, WIBN isn’t just about networking—it’s about being part of something bigger.

We can’t wait to see you!

As we move into 2025, the marketing landscape continues to evolve, blending the digital and personal like never before. While social media algorithms change and email campaigns compete for attention, one timeless strategy remains a cornerstone
                of business growth: networking as a marketing strategy.

Networking isn’t just about exchanging business cards; it’s about building relationships, creating opportunities, and establishing trust. Here are five reasons why networking should be an integral part of your marketing strategy in 2025.

Human connections in a digital world
The digital age has revolutionised how we do business, but it has also created a longing for authentic human connections. Whether you're attending local business networking events or joining virtual networking
        for women in business, these opportunities foster relationships that digital ads or emails simply cannot replicate.

When people connect with you on a personal level, they are more likely to trust your brand, recommend your services, and even become loyal customers. Networking groups like the Women in Business Network (WIBN) offer the chance to engage face-to-face
        or in meaningful virtual settings.

Expand your reach without algorithms

Digital marketing is powerful but often at the mercy of ever-changing algorithms. Networking bypasses these hurdles by putting you directly in front of potential clients, collaborators, and influencers. Instead of worrying about metrics like
                reach and engagement rates, professional networking tips focus on building meaningful, real-time conversations.

Every connection you make at professional networking events has the potential to extend your brand’s reach. Word of mouth, introductions, or referrals can often achieve what digital ads cannot.

Gain valuable insights and inspiration

Networking isn’t just about promoting your business; it’s also a fantastic opportunity to learn from others. Conversations at industry-specific networking groups for women or other professional events can provide valuable insights into emerging
                trends, challenges, and opportunities in your field.

By keeping your finger on the pulse of what’s happening in your industry, you’ll be better equipped to adapt your marketing strategy and stay ahead of the competition.

Strengthen your personal brand

In 2025, personal branding will be more important than ever. Networking allows you to showcase your expertise, share your story, and position yourself as a thought leader. People do business with people they know, like, and trust, and networking
                helps you embody those qualities in a genuine way.

By attending networking events in the UK or participating in virtual sessions, you can build your personal brand through networking. Your presence, contributions, and follow-ups will leave a lasting impression on your connections.

Create opportunities for collaboration

Collaboration is the key to innovation. Networking helps you find potential partners who complement your business and open doors to joint ventures, partnerships, or co-branded projects. These collaborations can amplify your marketing efforts by pooling resources, combining audiences, and creating something unique and valuable.

                For entrepreneurs and women in business, partnerships born out of networking can be game-changers, enhancing both your reach and your brand.

            Hampstead member Susan Isaacs has had six of her paintings chosen for an exhibition at Bloomsbury's prestigious Goodenough Collegea>, hosted
            by the lady Mayoress for International Womens Day.

            The theme for the event ties in with Goodenough College’s ‘Maive Society’, named after Maive Goodenough, Frederick Goodenough’s wife whose idea it was to start the college. This College society celebrates ‘unrecognised or invisible women throughout history’.
            The theme is supported by music, art, and poetry from both Livery and Goodenough members, which will be displayed throughout the Main Hall, forming thought provoking, informal talking points while we network.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

A celebration of women

                The event will include arrival to music from Goodenough College musicians, drinks and canapes while you view our art installations and meet the artists.

                Welcome from The Lady Mayoress, followed by a Fireside Chat with Dame Susan Langley, DBE (Alderwoman & Sheriff) who will talk about her own journey towards her role as Sheriff of the City of London, sharing some of her experiences and thoughts on ‘invisible
                women’.

Unexpected Success

Susan began painting portraits during lockdown for pleasure. She posted a few pieces on Linked In, and to her delight and astonishment, was then commissioned by Francine Stock, former chair of the Tate Members, and Diane Lennan, Director
                    of the Barbican and Serpentine Art Galleries. Susan then started painting seriously and has sold 25 portraits to date, in countries as far as Canada and Norway, and has produced portraits for several WIBN members

                Embrace The Revolution: 2024 Is The Year Of Unapologetic Rest

                WIBN Thanet member Rosanagh Fuller is CEO of Power of Women Thanet, a small but mighty charity based in East Kent. POW believes that the arts and creativity have the transformative
                power to make the world more equal.

                For their 9th annual International Women's Day Festival, this year's theme is a bold declaration: rest is not just a theme; it's a necessary revolution. In a world where women have long been measured by their productivity and societal contributions, often
                overshadowing their need for self-care and rest, POW Thanet Festival 2024 seeks to change the narrative. What if relaxation isn't a luxury but a revolutionary act?

                Addressing the Unpaid Labor of Women

                Statistics reveal a startling imbalance in unpaid labour, with women in the UK contributing an estimated 23.2 billion hours of unpaid childcare, worth approximately £382 billion. These figures underscore the need to re-evaluate women's roles and the importance
                of rest in their lives.

POW invites everyone to join this revolutionary movement. It's a call to reject the relentless grind of productivity and embrace the radical act of rest. In 2024, we stand together to proclaim that rest is not just an act of self-care; it

                Small Businesses Need Your Support!

                We think it’s really important to support small businesses, and there's never been a more crucial time than right now.

                During the pandemic communities rallied around their local suppliers and support for small businesses increased. According to Shopify research; of those surveyed who reported shopping locally, 79% said they did so to protect their communities. “People
                are realizing, ‘If I don’t seek out independent businesses, they will cease to exist,’” says Satish Kanwar, VP Product, Shopify.

                Economic uncertainty and continued supply chain woes mean that post-pandemic these businesses still need our support.

                SMEs account for three-fifths of the employment and around half of turnover in the UK private sector.

                    At the start of 2023 there were 5.5 million small businesses (with 0 to 49 employees), 99.2% of the total business population.

                        With some small businesses being run by just one person, you are making a huge difference to their lives. Plus, you often receive a more personal service, with more thought and love going into the products and services.

Small Businesses Keep Your Community Interesting

            Local businesses give a community its flavour. The combined presence of your town's many local businesses make it different from every other place in the world.

They cater to niche customers

            Small businesses are often created to solve a problem that exists or a product that isn't available. Underrepresented founders often cater to the unique needs of their own communities. Entrepreneurship becomes a way to bypass discrimination or bias—allowing
            them to build products or offer services on their own terms.

            Supporting small businesses helps underrepresented founders thrive and build strength in their communities, paving the way for future generations.

Why Support Small Businesses?

Small business owners are important to the economic and social fabric of our society, which is why it’s so important to support them.

They make a positive impact to the local economy.

New businesses and entrepreneurship inspires and promotes growth and more entrepreneurship. Growing companies, some started from kitchen tables and spare bedrooms enable other small businesses to thrive in their wake.

When you buy local, your money is much more likely to stay in the community and help local development. This is called the multiplier effect. For example, a restaurant buying ingredients from local suppliers or a local mortgage broker hiring
                a local design firm. This helps the whole business community prosper. When you buy local, significantly more of that money stays in the local community.

                    For every £1 spent with local businesses, typically around 56 extra pence is spent locally.

They put the customer first

Many new business owners launch as a solo venture and therefore fill every role in the business, including customer service. The good ones will often bend over backward for each shopper—because every customer matters when you’re small.

Sustainable Shopping

Smaller businesses often have the means to source products and manufacture locally and because of smaller quantities. They are often makers, producing goods locally. Or they are resellers of products made by other small brands.You may pay more
            for these goods, however, you’re paying for the peace of mind that comes with sustainable and ethical production.

Support your local farmer and buy locally sourced ingredients. It’s easy to head to the supermarkets to get food but you may be missing out on delicious local produce.

Supporting Small Business Matters

Small businesses continue to be the bread and butter of our economy. And although local small businesses are considered the underdogs next to large corporations, the pros of supporting locally run businesses have never been clearer.

Supporting your community - one local business at a time.

Successful local businesses bring character and variety to an area, attracting more tourists (think of Edinburgh or Manchester) and boosting the prices of nearby homes. Local businesses also create revenue that supports council services, such
            as libraries, parks and roads.

How will you support a small business today?

            We recently held a Brilliant Breakfast event in support of the amazing Prince’s Trust ‘Change a Young Woman's Life’ campaign.

            We hosted over 50 women on zoom for some uplifting networking and a self-care workshop presented by Prince’s Trust alumni Kimberley Drain of Nourish Northern Mamas.

            During the networking session, we asked everyone to talk about the advice they would give to their younger selves. Encouraging them to look back and consider the support they would have benefited from as young women.

What Would You Tell Her?

                There were some brilliant answers. Many women shared their stories and pearls of wisdom and we want to share them here with you.

                First up is our co-owner, entrepreneurial marketer & business leader Helen Fletcher.

Helen says…

            <pI would say to my younger self:

1. Be around people who believe in you.

2. Tell people you believe in them.

Because, when I look back, I can see it’s the people that believed in me that really helped me achieve what I wanted to achieve.

Recently, my dad had been having a clearout and gave me my old school reports. There was one teacher who stood out – Mrs Owen, my maths teacher clearly believed in me. I remember Mrs Owen giving up her coffee breaks in the staff room to
                    coach me in maths because I had some big gaps because I’d been to 6 different primary schools (my dad was in the RAF). I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I went on to do a maths degree.

Later, when I was in my late 20s, I worked for someone who I can now see, set me up for failure and this basically crushed my self-confidence. To cut a long story short, I left the company with my confidence at the lowest it’s been having
                    been told that I wouldn’t progress anytime soon.

The power of belief

Thankfully, when I changed companies, I ended up working for this phenomenal woman, called Emma, who believed in me and recognised that I was having a crisis of confidence.
She turned things around for me by asking lots of people who I worked with to send her 3 or 4 words they would use to describe me, and then she got me in a room and read them all to me.

<Now, I suspect that there were a couple in that pile that weren’t 100% complimentary, but if that was the case, Emma brushed over these and focused on the 95% positive words.

So, she basically spent an hour telling me how brilliant people in my organisation thought I was.

I went on to be promoted twice in 2 years at the new company and I honestly don’t think it would have happened if Emma hadn’t believed in me.

And the last story I’m going to tell about belief is about a young woman I worked with 5 years ago. Together we had set up a large children’s day nursery – me with no experience of setting up nurseries and her with some. It was overwhelming at times and we had some major ups and downs together, but we did it and made a success of it. And when I sold the nursery, she sent me a card that said: ‘thank you for believing in me, when I didn’t believe in myself’.

So, my advice to my younger self would be:

1. Hang around people who believe in you.

2. Tell people you believe in them.

Ellen Badat of Purple Tree Solutions

Ellen’s advice to her younger self is…

                Look after your health – it’s the only thing you’ve really got.

This also means that you should protect your time and appreciate the power of saying NO.
Ellen also had a brilliant tip to do this -
DND days!

This stands for Do Not Disturb/Do Nothing Day.
To make sure these happen write the word ‘something’ in your diary. When somebody asks if you’re free you can say “I’ve got something in my diary I cant make it”.

Our Kent franchisee Katherine Vass’ advice is:

                Number 1 - Put yourself out there and meet new people.

Do things that stretch your comfort zone, it will give you extra capacity and you will grow.
It is never as scary as your mind will lead you believe!

            Number 2 - Make daily exercise part of your routine, it will keep you level headed and give you more confidence.

Cumbria based Jo Geddes came along to our Brilliant Breakfast and shared the advice she would give to her younger self.

                Don’t let other people's opinions change your mind about your dreams and ambitions.

There is a well-known saying. “The opinions of others is not your business”.
Don't be too concerned with what other people think. Don't doubt yourself and think…
“I wouldn’t be good at that or I can’t do that.”

            Live a life of adventure, not of regret.

Chester member Sally Inkster shared her advice for her younger self.

“You have the right to do whatever you want to!”

Sally explained that a thought she often had when she was younger was… What gives you the right to?

What gives you the right to this success, or ambition, or countless other things?

This was a feeling that Sally had as a result of feeling ‘squashed’ by others – and the resulting need to minimise herself.
But on reflection Sally would tell her younger self that she has the right to do and achieve anything she pleases. Don’t become less to make others feel better.

“Be yourself!”

Bedfordshire & West Hertfordshire franchisee Louise Yexley has some great advice she would give to her younger self.

“Always say yes to opportunities as you never know where they might lead you in life.”

Marylebone member Margaux Cras’ advice rings true with many of us.

“Take care of yourself – if you don’t take care of yourself then nothing works.”

When Margaux first arrived in the UK she was working 7 days a week. It wasn’t easy and wanted to give my best everyday but soon found that you can’t put from an empty cup.

If don’t take care of yourself your physical health suffers and you don’t have enough energy and make bad decisions.

North Cheshire, East Merseyside & Altrincham franchisee Susie Sprigg’s advice is…

                “Learn as much as you can - especially about people”

After a significant event in her life, Susie put her energy and focus into learning and self-development, and the results were amazing.

            She wishes she had done this much sooner and often thinks about how her life would have changed if she had done this 10 or 20 years ago.

Chelmsford member Caroline Sidney-Payne advises…

                “Believe in yourself and don't worry too much.”

Caroline says - when I first started my business I was going too fast and worrying too much, grabbing at every opportunity and worried to take a break.

But I have learnt not to beat myself up for taking time out or not succeeding at everything I do.

            "Don’t worry so much. Believe in the magic of yourself."

“There is so much joy to be found in new chapters.”

Never forget who you are now as you'll be working hard to find her as you get older, and above all - be kind to yourself.

Online networking events are a smart way to network

            Online networking events became very popular during the pandemic, they were a necessity in a world where we couldn't get out and about to meet business connections.

            At WIBN we worked hard to make sure that all of our meetings could take place online as quickly as possible. This allowed our members to stay connected, continue networking and receive support which was now more essential than ever.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Embracing online networking

                Many of us quickly went from never using video conferencing to logging in multiple times a week for anything from family catch-ups to regular business meetings. Whilst we set out with some trepidation and lots of cries of "You're on mute", we soon got
                used to this new way of connecting.

                And what's more, many of us began to love it... Connecting with people at the click of a button, with no travelling involved and easy to use technology like
                 Zoom.

                <div class " br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Networking online works

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

With all of our local networking meetings successfully operating online it gave us the idea that online networking might be something that people wanted to do (rather than just needed to do). Online networking opens up so many possibilities
                    for women all around the UK to meet each other.

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Connecting Women all around the UK

In 2020 we launched our first national online group and we haven't looked back. Our members absolutely love the freedom that networking online affords them and we now have a large network of women from all around the UK (and even in Spain)
                    regularly meeting online.

All seven online groups meet monthly on Zoom and network in the same way that our in-person groups do. This includes sharing information and referrals, supporting each other through their business journeys and growing their network.

Each meeting follows a similar structure:

Open networking

Welcome and one-minute pitches

Business spotlight (focus on one member’s business

Let's Talk Business! Your chance to request 121's, share testimonials, & pass business contacts

Close and more open networking

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

The benefits of networking online with WIBN

Networking online with WIBN gives you the opportunity to spend time with other motivated businesswomen, in a vibrant, energetic and supportive environment where great connections are made and opportunities arise, all from the comfort of
                    your office.

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

A warm welcome

Whether you are a business owner, entrepreneur or business professional, you can be sure of a warm welcome.

In addition to their monthly meetings, all online members are able to visit the other online groups free of charge. We also operate bi-weekly online drop-in sessions for extra networking opportunities and business inspiration.

WIBN National Online membership offers almost endless opportunities to network, for those who prefer to meet from the comfort of their own (home) office. Our National Online Meetings are the perfect way to network if you prefer online meetings
                    and your business is not geographically limited.

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Find a national meeting

                <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

Groups meet online every month to build business relationships that generate referrals, create collaborations and provide mutual support.

You can find a national meeting and book your visit here BOOK A NATIONAL MEETING.

                This month we sat down with London City member Stefania Bartolomei to ask her "What to wear for networking meetings?"

Meet Stefania

Networking Style

                Stefania says "As a business owner, I find that the best form of marketing is word of mouth and recommendations, so I attend regular networking events with fellow business owners to help me extend my network of contacts that I can recommend to clients, and in return, they may also recommend my services to their contacts too!".

In these meetings, there is a variety of professionals: some running their own business (from creative to more executive, digital and technical jobs) or more corporate roles, like lawyers and financial advisors. And although these meetings
                are not so formal, when attending you still want to make sure you look professional enough and that your style helps you give the right message, showing your authenticity, your ethos, your values, and, especially, helping attract the right
                clients!

Despite the diversity of roles and professions, there is one questions that everyone asked rhemselves many times before attending one of these networking meetings, which is: "what do I wear?"

Stefania's Top 3 Tips

Wear your best colours

Whether it is through clothing, accessories, make-up..they'll help you shine, effortlessly.

You don't need to wear a suit...

or black, in order to look professional. And especially if your job doesn't require a formal dresscode, you need to find your own way to come across as professional.

Wear something that makes you feel empowered

When you feel confident, you look confident, and this is a powerful combination to win people's trust. After all, your final aim is to make people buy from you.

Make your choice

So, when deciding what to wear to a networking meeting, you should consider a few questions, that will help you pick the right clothes and outfit:

What do I feel most confident in?

What message do I want to convey with my style?

And finally, don't underestimate the power of colour! From colours that will help you look radiant on the outside, to those which help you share the right message (I'm sure you've heard of the colour psychology!), the choice of the colours you
            wear has a deep impact on your performance, success and, of course, on your look!

Now these are generic and universal tips, but when working one on one with clients, we take into account their features, their role, their personality and their brand values, helping them develop a personal style that is aligned with their brand!

So, if you often find yourself staring at your wardrobe and asking "what should I wear?" Before networking meetings, please contact ONE OF A STYLE, Stefania and her team will help you get clarity, by
            exploring and developing your personal style.

Gender Pension Gap

This year's International Women's Day theme is EMBRACE EQUITY.

                One of WIBN's key principles is that EMPOWERED WOMEN EMPOWER WOMEN.When women are empowered amazing things happen. A more equitable world leads to more empowered women. And more empowered women lead to a more amazing world.

                We asked our members to think about what women's equity and empowerement means to them. Our Caversham member Emma Cowley is an Investment Manager at RBC Brewin Dolphin - Helping people to save, plan and invest for their future.

                She wanted to shine a light on the gender pension gap that many women are facing and offer some advice to combat this.

                Women could be heading for an even worse retirement crisis than men, with women more likely to underestimate how much they need to save into their pension and fewer women investing despite rising inflation.

On average, female respondents think they’ll need £472,000 to fund a comfortable retirement – that’s £77,000 less than their male peers. Whilst this sounds like a sizeable pot, worryingly, our analysis suggests someone with a pot of this size
                could risk a retirement income shortfall or be forced to work for several years longer than anticipated.

The gender pension gap stems from the fact that women tend to earn less than men1 and are more likely to take career breaks to look after children. On average, women’s pension pots at age 65 are only one-third of men’s at the same age.

How much do you need?

Despite these lower expectations, just 37% of women are confident they’ll save enough for retirement, versus 57% of men. Even then, when we asked what they’d do with an extra £100 per month, only 31% of women would save it into a pension, compared
            with 41% of men.

This lack of understanding around saving for retirement suggests the ‘gender pension gap’ is unlikely to narrow any time soon.

It is clear that women need to take action now if they are to enjoy the same standard of living as men in their later years.

What can you do?

There are some simple steps you could take now to improve your chances of a financially secure and fulfilling future.

1. Make the most of workplace pensions and tax relief

Pensions are a great way of saving for your future because of the tax relief you receive on personal pension contributions. A £100 contribution only costs you £80 if you’re a basic-rate taxpayer or £60 if you’re a higher-rate taxpayer. If you’re
            a member of a workplace pension scheme, you’ll also benefit from employer pension contributions, which can really help to supercharge how much money you have at retirement.

2. Try to make up for any gaps by increasing contributions if you can

If you’ve taken a career break, think about whether you could increase your personal pension contributions to make up for any savings gaps. This might seem impossible right now, but creating a budgeting and savings plan is a good place to start.
            It may be the case that you can afford to save more into your pension once your children finish nursery, for example.

3. Check whether your existing savings could be working harder

If you’re unable to save more money each month, another way to boost your finances is to check your existing savings are working hard enough. Workplace pension providers often put you in their default fund, which might not offer enough long-term
            growth potential. Meanwhile, leaving excess money in a cash savings account could result in your money losing its real value as inflation erodes its purchasing power. A financial adviser can help you decide which pension fund is right for
            you and invest your money so that it has the opportunity to grow in real terms over time.

4. Get some smart advice

Pensions and investments can seem complicated, but sticking your head in the sand isn’t the answer. The steps you take today could make a real difference to your future, enabling you to reach your goals faster and enjoy a fun-filled retirement.

                We asked our members to think about what women's equity and empowerement means to them. This is what our Warrington, Knutsford & Altrincham franchisee Susie Greatbanks had to say...

                There is a really famous quote that says…

                “Support women on their way to the top. Trust that they will extend a hand to those who follow”.

Whilst I believe that those women that rise to the top undoubtedly pave the way for those that follow, for me that’s not enough.

The quote that really resonates with me is…

“When women support each other incredible things happen”.

I believe that we can all support each other, cheer each other on and lift each other up no matter what stage we’re at. You don’t have to wait until you get to the top to lift up your fellow woman. Do it now!

There is often a misconception that you need to be in a position of power in order to support someone else. Many women tell me that they don’t feel that their support is important or they don’t have the credentials to offer help that is of
                any worth.

I say “that’s rubbish”. We are all worthy and each of us are capable of offering really helpful advice and support.

Empowered Women Empower Women

Sometimes all it takes is a listening ear or some words of encouragement to make someone feel supported. A different perspective is really valuable and you don’t know who you will inspire with your thoughts.

Sharing your story and listening to others is EMPOWERING. The achievements and successes along with the failures and lessons learned.

Whether you’re at the beginning of your journey or 10 years into business, your voice is important. Make your voice heard.

            Each one of our many WIBN groups is owned and managed by a wonderful Franchisee. These fantastic businesswomen are the heart of our network and make each meeting a fun and productive place to be.

            The franchisees are businesswomen just like you and have used networking to create a successful business. Owning a business with WIBN lends itself very well to combining networking with business development. Allowing you to grow your network in a really
            effective way.

            Our Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire franchisee Louise Yexley has been with WIBN almost from the start so has huge experience in the world of networking. She runs local business expos and is
            a judge for national business awards.

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

Along with a background in HR and Employee Development, Louise previously ran an award winning marketing business for 10 years. She now owns and runs nine amazing WIBN groups across Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire as well as a National Online group.

Louise originally joined the visited the newly formed Hitchin group 15 years ago as a member as a way to build her new business. She very quickly became a member and loved it so much she’s still a part of WIBN today.

Women In Business Network Franchise

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

Originally a member of the Hitchin group, when Louise was offered the opportunity to become group leader and then become a business owner with WIBN it was an easy decision. She saw
            it as the next step to make the most of networking and build her business at the same time.

Over the last 15 years Louise has organised numerous events for her WIBN members including International Women's Day and Summer Meetings for over 100 members. She is a big believer that networking works best when you get to know each other and
            do things collaboratively.

Since her original decision to become group leader of the Hitchin group, Louise has gone on to own and run 8 more groups and her role as WIBN franchisee is now her full time business.

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Face To Face & National Groups

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Louise runs eight local groups around her area of Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire. These Local Meetings are a great way of meeting like-minded business women based in the same local area. These groups meet in-person or online every month and are
            a brilliant way build business relationships that generate referrals, create collaborations and provide mutual support.

Traditionally, our local groups were all held in face to face venues in the local area. However, with the onset of the pandemic we very quickly facilitated all of our groups to go online.

            The pandemic hit us and we all went completely online which was unheard of. And then when we started to think about coming back my groups were not sure so we decided to do a mixture online and offline groups.”

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Once the pandemic ended some of our members began telling us that they had enjoyed some aspects of online networking. Some even preferred it! Therefore, we have now taken on a mixture of both online and face to face groups.

Many of our local groups now enjoy a split of online and in-person networking with many choosing to carry out 6 face to face and 6 online very year.

Additionally, the feedback we received showed us that many women preferred networking entirely online and were interested in doing this permanently. They enjoyed the flexible nature of networking from their home or office and enjoyed meeting women from all areas off the UK.

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 30px; ">

With online networking your location isn’t an obstacle, neither do you have to take travel time into account.

And so, we launched our very first National Online groups in October 2020. There was immediate interest and very soon we had grown to six online groups.

            ”When WIBN said they were launching some national online groups I thought… There will be some people that this will be absolutely amazing for. If you are not bound by geography then a national group is fantastic because you get to meet people from all parts of the country, and some international.”

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

How do the local and national groups differ?

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Our local groups are still mainly face to face, and may people enjoy and need that from their networking. However, our national groups really work for women that want to reach a national network and do so from their own place of work.

The structure of the meetings both online and in-person is very similar at all WIBN groups. You will get the same friendly welcome, opportunity to speak about yourself, listen to others and build relationships.

Both styles of networking include 60 second pitches, spotlight speakers and business topics and encourage inspiring and motivational conversation.

The real point of difference with the national groups is that because we have a number of them you are able to visit any of the other national online group free of charge (as long as your category isn’t taken). Additionally we run weekly coffee mornings where all national group members can come together and network.

Louise has spent the past 15 years networking with WIBN and really enjoys both face to face and online groups. She also has lots of experience and knowledge that are invaluable to anyone starting out on their networking journey. So, we decided to ask her for her top tips.

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px;
                ">

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

What’s your top tip for networking?

Louise told us that she meets women all of the time that are apprehensive about attending a networking meeting. Many women find attending very daunting, the thought of walking through the door and delivering their 60 second pitch can be overwhelming. However, Louise has some great advice to calm those thoughts.

            ”Just come along with an open mind and treat it as if you are coming along for a chat with someone you know. NOT in a selling mode. Networking is all about building relationships and that takes time. Make conversation, find common ground and the business will come later.”

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

As well as her experience in networking and business Louise also really enjoys getting involved in her local community and taking part in charity events. Recently, members took part in a virtual marathon with their own WIBN Strava group which helped many members get out and about over 30 days and raise funds for the charity members in the groups.

To get to know her a little better, we asked Louise….

       <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t expect

<div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Louise’s answer certainly wasn’t something we expected when she replied that she had featured in the 1984 Christmas Annual for Jackie Magazine. At the age of 16 Louise wrote to Jackie to ask if she could do a makeover, and to her surprise they replied with YES and invited her to London. She went and had a makeover, had her photograph taken and then appeared in a double-page spread!

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

Start A Business With The Support Of Other Women

        <div class "br-spacer " style="padding-top: 15px; ">

As Louise has said networking is a great way to meet like-minded people and The Women in Business Network (WIBN) has some great opportunities to start your own business.

You can start your own WIBN group as a franchisee which means you are your own boss, managing your own time and finances.

Our tried and tested business model sets you up for success and you will receive coaching and ongoing support from other experienced businesswomen.

New Franchisees And New WIBN Groups

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            We’re delighted to announce that we have recently recruited three new franchisees, two of whom were already members of their local WIBN networking groups.

            Dorothy Greig, Helen Clarke and Sharon Carter will open their new businesses in the coming weeks in their local areas.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Dorothy Greig

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

                New franchisee Dorothy Greig was a member of the Milton Keynes WIBN group that closed during Covid. She missed the meetings and the support she received from her fellow members so much as she built up her Tropic skincare business, that when the business
                came up for sale, she bought it.

                Subsequently, Dorothy’s husband’s job has been relocated to Manchester meaning a family move; undeterred, Dorothy will not only return to Milton Keynes to continue to run her meetings but will also launch a brand-new group in Manchester. Dorothy is also
                in her second year of Law School.

Dorothy said:

                “I’m very excited to get my group up and running and I look forward to welcoming some fantastic women, to helping support them and watching them grow, not just in business but all round.”

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Helen Clarke

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Helen Clarke was a member of her local WIBN group in Preston, Lancashire; she accredits the group with helping her to grow her successful digital marketing company, which she still runs alongside her other businesses. When the Preston WIBN group closed during Covid, rather than miss her meetings, Helen travelled a 100-mile round-trip to her next nearest group, in Chester.

When her local Preston territory was offered for sale, Helen jumped at the chance to buy it. She will be offering groups in Preston, Blackburn and the Ribble Valley in due course.

Helen said:

            “Empowering and supporting women to develop and grow into the very best versions of themselves is something I am really passionate about. I am excited to bring together passionate businesswomen across Lancashire.”

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Sharon Carter

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Sharon Carter initially saw an advert on Facebook to buy an existing WIBN territory in Cambridgeshire, but her location wasn’t quite right, so she bought one closer to home instead. Her meetings will cover Wisbeach, Holbeach, and soon, Peterborough.

Sharon already owns a successful estate agency and had been thinking about starting up a similar women-only networking group. After a chat with franchise manager Angel Scott-Bottoms, she realised that WIBN had already built the exact networking group she was planning to open, so bought her local territory rather than, as she put it, ‘reinventing the wheel’.

Sharon said:

            “I am incredibly excited to start WIBN groups in my local area. To be able to support women in business in an environment which is safe, nurturing, encouraging and dynamic, sprinkled with some humour, is an honour and a privilege.”

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

A Brilliant Team

    <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Franchise consultant at WIBN Angel Scott-Bottoms who oversees their joining said:

            “It is so exciting to welcome these three new ladies to the network. They each bring so much value with them and I know they are going to be a huge asset to the brand. Having previously to them only over zoom, it was great to be able to do their induction training day in person. I’m really excited for them to officially launch their businesses and to supporting them as they grow.”

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Meet The Franchisee - Sarah Van Dort

            Each one of our many WIBN groups is owned and managed by a wonderful Franchisee. These fantastic businesswomen are the heart and soul of our network and make each meeting a productive and enjoyable place to be.

            The franchisees are businesswomen just like you, and like many of you they own multiple businesses. Owning a business with WIBN lends itself very well to working alongside another business because you can combine networking with business development and
            grow your network in a really effective way.

            Our Berkshire & Buckinghamshire franchisee Sarah Van Dort does just that. She owns two businesses that work perfectly alongside each other.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Ab Fab Image

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Sarah’s first business is the Ab Fab Image. Sarah is passionate about helping women and men feel the best they can every day. With a passion for fashion, a keen eye for style and by using tried and tested
            colour and style analysis, Sarah helps people of any age, size, shape, colour or personality to make this feeling a reality.

From the clothes and accessories you wear to your make-up and hair styling Sarah can advise you, and discuss in detail with you, the way to make you feel more confident in your every day life. She will hold your hand on your journey onwards by
            helping you with editing your wardrobe and shopping to add key pieces that may be missing. It really doesn't matter about your age, size or budget everybody can feel their best every day with some extra knowledge and advice.

Sarah very successfully built her styling business with the help of networking. Before she became a WIBN franchisee she was a member of the Thames Valley group. Here she met lots of fellow businesswomen and quickly gained clients.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Women In Business Network Franchise

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

When Sarah was offered the opportunity to become a business owner with WIBN she jumped at the chance. She saw it as the next step to combine her love for networking and build her business
            at the same time.

Sarah had found so much value in networking, both personally and professionally and wanted to continue that journey. Becoming a franchisee for WIBN was the next step in her business journey and within just two years Sarah has grown her WIBN business
            to seven groups across the country.

            When I started my styling business, I could do styling. However, I didn’t really have the business skills that I needed and that’s what I’ve learned through networking.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

How do these two different businesses work together?

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

You may think; how does running a styling business and a women’s networking business at the same time work? We asked Sarah the same question.

They work quite well because they are really quite similar.

That's because, whilst they are totally different disciplines they both involve building women up with confidence and making them feel amazing so that they can go out and achieve their goals. This is where Sarah’s passion truly lies.

Whether that's in business or in their personal lives, the two things slot together very nicely.

Whether she is helping women to find their style or build their network Sarah is passionate about building women up to be the best version of themselves.

How to use networking to build your business

As an experienced businesswoman that uses networking to boost her business Sarah has lots of tips about making networking work for you..

She has experience networking both as a member and group owner so she can bring lots of insight to the do’s and don’t of networking. So, we asked her the question… What is your top tip for women who are starting out and looking at networking
            to help their business.

Sarah answered that networking is absolutely VITAL to building any business.

Sarah’s top tip is…

            It's not enough to just attend your monthly meeting, you need to network outside of the meetings too. 1-2-1's, connecting on social media and building your business skills are all really important.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

            Each one of our many WIBN groups is owned and managed by a wonderful Franchisee. These fantastic businesswomen are the heart and soul of our network and make each meeting a fun and fruitful place to be.

            The franchisees are businesswomen just like you, and just like many of you they own multiple businesses. Owning a business with WIBN lends itself very well to working alongside another business (or two). This is because you can combine networking with
            business development and grow your contacts in a really effective way.

            Our Chester & Liverpool franchisee Rosie Diver does just that. She owns three unique businesses that all work
            perfectly alongside each other.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Digital Coach

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Rosie’s first business is the Thinking Woman’s Digital Coach. Rosie helps transform those who can’t and don’t, into those who can, and do!

With her fresh approach to developing a digital mindset Rosie helps you reduce overwhelm and confusion with your tech and move your businesses forward. She shows businesswomen how to use the right tools for the job, reduce the stress of tech-based
            misery, and saves you time, and money. It’s a way of empowering you and putting an end to the misery of tech-stress. Delivered via a coaching, mentoring and accountability approach to learning business based digital skills.

Rosie very successfully built her digital coaching business with the help of networking. Before she became a WIBN franchisee she was a member of the Liverpool group. Here she met lots of fellow businesswomen and quickly gained clients.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Women In Business Network Franchise

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

When Rosie was offered the opportunity to become a business owner with WIBN it was a ‘no brainer’. She describes it as the next logical step because she loves the supportive and nurturing
            environment that the Women In Business Network has created.

            I love it that it’s women supporting women, I love the way women network.
It was an opportunity to have a ready made, currently working well business that I could add to my portfolio, and I love every second of it.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Of Paths And Paddles

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Of Paths & Paddles is Rosie’s third business and at first glance it may seem a little out of place..

This fun and unique opportunity offers Women only adventures, at nature's pace to reset and recharge your batteries, connect with yourself and other like-minded women.

Including canoeing, paddle boarding and guided mindfulness walking (and paddling).

Of Paths & Paddles helps women to reconnect with the outdoors, find space in their busy lives and discover their potential.

Rosie has been a canoe coach since 1996. And her canoe courses are a fun, relaxed, challenging, different way to spend your time. Just imagine, you and a group of like-minded women, paddling smoothly along a stretch of water. All you can see are
            trees, the sky, wildlife, your new friends and the water in front of you, reflecting the beautiful outdoors all around you. You can sense the calm, feel connected, empowered, strong and with each paddle stroke, you will push yourself further
            and further from your old comfort zone.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

How do these three different businesses work together?

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

You may think; how does running a digital coaching business, a women’s networking business and an outdoor adventure business at the same time work? We asked Rosie the same question.

They slot together nicely, because they are multiple facets of me. I have had my own business for 11 years and as I started out in business I learned about networking. I have been a networker for many years and can see the benefits and joys of
            networking to build my business. And I love being in a room supporting other people, it is absolutely at the core of who I am and what I do.

Rosie’s passion for supporting and helping other people is something she brings into all three of her businesses and that’s why they work so well together.

Whether she is helping businesswomen to solve their tech problems, building their network or giving them the opportunity to thrive not survive by trying something new and adventurous.

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

How to use networking to build your business

As an experienced businesswoman that uses networking to boost her business Rosie is the perfect person to share her knowledge.

She has experience networking both as a member and group facilitator so she can bring lots of insight to the do’s and don’t of networking. So, we asked her the question… What is your top tip for women who are starting out and looking at networking
            to help their business.

Rosie answered that the biggest mistake is that people focus too much on who they are and what they do; rather than how they can help and the amazing results they can bring.

Rosie’s top tip is…

            To be outcome focused and to tap into the emotion. Who doesn’t want to work with you so that they can feel more joy, less stressed or more energised.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Start A Business With The Support Of Other Women

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

The rise of the Multiple Business Owner

            It’s a trend that had started before the pandemic, but has accelerated considerably during and beyond—the rise of the multiple business owner. Also known as a portfolio career.

            We’ve all heard people talk about their side-hustle; a small business they run alongside their paid employment. However, things have changed over the last couple of years.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Becoming a multiple business owner

                Many people also run small businesses from their homes alongside their jobs. Making the most of their talents they run businesses such as cake decorating, fitness classes, painting and many more.

                However, more and more people are looking at running more than one business at the same time. Instead of a ‘side-hustle’ they have multiple income streams that all complement each other. And most importantly this means that they are able to be self-employed
                whilst doing what they love. It also gives them a real variety in their work which boosts their passion and drive to succeed.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

From one success to another

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

It isn’t just people in employment that start an additional business. Many existing business owners are now starting new businesses to run alongside their existing ones. If you have gained success in running one business then why not use your
                experience, skills and knowledge to start another?

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

More than just a side-hustle

Some of the most well-known side-hustle businesses are MLM (Multi-level-marketing) or affiliate sales. You’ll have heard of some of the biggest ones; Tropic, Arbonne, Kleeneze, Utility Warehouse etc. They are a legitimate source of additional
                earnings for many working people.

To describe these businesses as a side-hustle may not be doing them the justice they deserve. Many women who own multiple businesses are making a very good income from all of them.

However, the real beauty of owning multiple businesses is that if you have other income streams you can give a new business the time it needs to become successful without needing to rely on it for income immediately.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Multi-tasking

Nobody is saying that managing a portfolio career is easy, however, as women, we are all used to spinning many plates - some may say it’s our forte! Women are also very good at switching from one task to another with ease, something that you’ll
                need to do as a multiple business owner.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Think big

From small acorns, big oak trees grow. There are many success stories about female entrepreneurs with multiple businesses. Gaynor Matthews of myNexus is a great example.

A key figure in UK start-up’s for over 25 years on the UK startup scene, Gaynor is currently Co-Founder and Chief Information Officer at Manchester-based myNexus.

First founding Wow How in 2015 and lead the business as CEO to build an AI app for the makeup industry. She also co-founded Sway Solutions, where she mentored startup entrepreneurs seeking pre-seed and seed funding rounds. Next came myNexus
                in 2019 where she now leads partner acquisition. Gaynor also supports emerging founders, as a Business Growth Advisor at the University of Warwick Science Park.

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Multi-faceted businesses

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

When considering setting up multiple businesses there are a few key things to think about:

Will the different businesses work together logistically? (e.g. can you run them all from home)e

How will you split your time between them?

Do they complement each other? (Can you serve the same client base with all businesses)

Do they bring you joy and reflect your personality?

            <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Complementary businesses

Running multiple businesses successfully can very often depend on them working well together and complementing each other. Your client base for one business may well crossover with your second or third. This makes generating business so much
                easier.

For example; if your coaching business is succeeding and you enjoy using networking as part of your marketing strategy then managing a networking group would be the natural next step.

Managing a networking group will give you the platform to make both yourself and your business more visible. The members of your networking group may well be the perfect clients for your coaching business! And most importantly this is true
                vice versa. When working successfully, managing a portfolio career is like running different departments of the same business.

Each one of our WIBN groups is a franchise that is owned and managed by a businesswoman. Most of our franchisee’s also own and manage other businesses that they successfully run alongside their WIBN business.

We have everything from business coaches, stylists, events organisers and even a canoe instructor!

The Platinum Jubilee

As the whole country prepares to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, it’s got us thinking about the woman behind the celebrations. We all know her name, and we look at her likeness every single day when we reach for some cash.

But, apart from her name and the fact that she is head of state do we know much more about HRH Queen Elizabeth the second?

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

The First Platinum Jubilee

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

On the 6th of February 2022, the Queen marked 70 years on the British throne. A feat which she is the first British monarch to achieve. And the whole country will be celebrating with a four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend at the beginning of June.

70 years! Wow, 70 years in any job is an incredible feat, but when that job is heading an entire country that is a real achievement.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

A Lifetime Of Achievements

During her 70 years on the throne Queen Elizabeth has visited over 100 countries carrying out over 20,000 engagements. Her longest overseas tour began in Bermuda in November 1953 and ended in Gibraltar in May 1954. She was travelling for a total of 168 days and visited 13 different countries.

The Queen is also patron of more than 500 organisations, including many education and training organisations, sports, recreational, arts and cultural organisations.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Little-known Military Service

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Little-known Military Service

The Queen became the first female member of the Royal Family to join the armed services as a full-time, active member in 1945.
She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (the women’s branch of the British Army during the Second World War) in 1945, learning to drive and maintain vehicles as part of her role as a Subaltern.

On VE Day, the Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) and her sister Princess Margaret, aged just 19 and 14 joined the crowds in London incognito. Princess Elizabeth was said to have pulled her ATS cap down over her face.

        “I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief.”

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Queen Elizabeth has held over 50 ranks in the Armed Services during her lifetime.

Paving Her Own Way

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15x;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Her military service wasn’t the only ‘first’ for The Queen. She developed quite a habit for breaking tradition and paved her own way in life.

Her marriage to Prince Phillip was no exception. In Tatler’s story ‘The Queen and Prince Philip’s love story in pictures’, they say with no exaggeration.

        “When it comes to love stories, the tale of Princess Elizabeth falling head-over-heels for strapping soldier, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, is worthy of its own Disney film.”

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

They first met in 1939 when the then Princess Elizabeth was just 13 years old. In her memoir The Little Princesses, Marion Crawford, the princesses’ governess recalls that Phillip’s presence caused Elizabeth to turn ‘pink-faced’.

Fast-forward to 1946 and Philip asked Elizabeth to marry him. Breaking tradition she agreed without even seeking her parents' permission. Her father, along with numerous courtiers, had reservations about the marriage. However, Elizabeth got her wish and publicly announced her engagement when she became 21.

The couple were married for a total of 74 years, with four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. They travelled side-by-side all over the world, and although it was Elizabeth at centre stage, they always seemed to have a very equal partnership.

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Innovation and Adventures

As well as becoming the longest reigning British monarch the Queen has been the first to take part in many other events.

She presented the England men’s football captain, Bobby Moore, with the World Cup Trophy in 1966. In 1969 she sent a message of congratulations to the Apollo 11 astronauts for the very first moon landing. On the 26th of March 1976, the Queen sent her first email to the US Secretary of Defence to formally open the UK/US collaboration on a military programming language.

In 1986 the Queen became the first British Monarch to visit China; she was also the first British Monarch to address the US House of Congress in May 1991.

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy Initiative

These conservation projects across the Commonwealth have preserved more than 100 million trees for future generations since its launch in 2015.

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust

Her Diamond Jubilee Trust, which was set up in 2012, has enabled over 100,000 people to have sight-saving surgery. It has also:

Treated more than 22 million people with antibiotics to reduce the spread of trachoma;

Built or upgraded over 81,000 latrines and washing facilities to prevent the spread of infection;

Screened over 13,000 babies for retinopathy of prematurity;

Screened more than 200,000 people for diabetic retinopathy.

<div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

We think that you will agree that the seventy years of The Queen’s reign have been interesting to say the least. Thrust into the limelight and given huge responsibility at such a young age, leading a country and bringing up a family can’t have been an easy task.

However you are celebrating the Platinum Jubilee we hope that you enjoy the break from work and spending time with your loved ones.

            When thinking about starting a new venture, more and more people are considering running a business from home.

            There are lots of reasons why this is becoming more popular, and it is now more attainable than ever.

            From customer service based businesses to beauty and retail, running a business from home is a smart choice.

            The events of 2020 and 2021 proved that you can manage almost any business from home. And the stigma of not having a big fancy office is definitely in the past. Working from home is now very much the norm.

            So, if you are looking to get out of the rat race and become your own boss, running a business from home may well be for you.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Freedom

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

The top reason that most people start their own business is the freedom that it provides. Freedom to manage your own workload, schedule and time. If you’re tired of living for the weekend and missing out on opportunities due to a rigid work schedule
            then working for yourself is very appealing.

The most exciting advantage of starting a home-based business is the retrieval of lost time. No more sitting in traffic for hours or long boring meeting eating into your evenings. This also means you’ll have a lot more time and energy to invest
            into your business and make it a success.

When you are running a business from home, you can switch between your personal life and work life at the drop of a hat. It’s less stressful to juggle the demands of work and family when you are managing your own diary.

However, it’s not for everyone. You will need drive, self-discipline, and good time-management skills in order to make it work.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Flexible Opportunity

When running your own business you are in control of your own destiny. All of the hard work that you put in will ultimately benefit you… Not a faceless corporation.

You can also take advantage of opportunities as they come your way. Running your own business is not a linear pursuit and you will be able to take advantage of any opportunities as they present themselves to you.

Being your own boss gives you the chance to explore lots of different roles. In any given day you may well take on the role of purchaser, marketing, strategist, sales manager, and more.

It can be challenging, however it gives you great insight and experience which builds your worth.

You don’t have to wait for that raise or promotion.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Home Based Business Ideas

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

There are many different options when it comes to choosing your home-based business. Here are just a few:

Start a web-store buying products in bulk and selling them online

Sell products that you create at home

Offer online services such as accounting services or social media support

Teach online classes

Buy a franchise and build it up

Start a subscription-box business - think Glossy box or similar

Launch a photography business

Start an affiliate marketing business e.g. Tropic or Arbonne

Become a virtual personal trainer or yoga instructor

Many of our very successful WIBN members run businesses from home in a huge variety of different sectors. From award-winning designers and marketing professionals and hugely successful lifestyle businesses to professional consultants and bookkeepers.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Get Out Of The House

Running a business from home doesn’t mean that you have to spend all of your time in your home office. Many businesses that are based form home spend lots of their time visiting clients and attending meetings at other locations.

For example a photographer or videographer will spend much of their time on location at shoots and events.

Similarly a professional consultant will visit their clients businesses multiple times a week.

Even if you’re business is primarily based at home it’s still important to get out of the house. Being a solo entrepreneur can be lonely sometimes so it’s beneficial to go and meet with other people

Networking is a great way to get a change of scenery, meet like-minded people and most importantly grow your business. The tips and advice you can pick up are invaluable and the opportunities are endless.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Working With WIBN

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Start A Business With The Support Of Other Women

The Women in Business Network (WIBN) has some great opportunities to start your own business. And the best part is that you can do it working from home.

You can start your own WIBN group as a franchisee which means you are your own boss, managing your own time and finances.

Our tried and tested business model sets you up for success and you will receive coaching and ongoing support from other experienced businesswomen.

The Women in Business Network (WIBN) has enquiries every week from women across the UK who want to join but don’t have a group in their area. Opening a new group in your area will help you to build a business and a Network.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Why Franchise

            Franchising is a low-risk way to start a business and become self-employed. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

            However, there are lots of misconceptions about franchising and what it really means. So, we’re here to explain it all and give you the low-down on owning a franchise.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

What Is Franchising?

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

A Franchise is…

A franchise is a process of distributing products or services involving a franchisor, who establishes the brand’s trademark or trade name and a business system.

Basically, a brand allows people to operate using their brand name whilst operating as an individual business.

A Franchisee is…

A franchisee pays a royalty (and an initial fee) for the right to do business under the franchisor's name and system. For example, the franchisee could open a new restaurant using the franchisor's name and branding.

An example of a franchising business is the Women In Business Network. There are multiple WIBN groups spread all around the UK that all operate under the Women In Business Network brand.

Each WIBN group is owned by a franchisee that owns a number of groups and operates them as their own business.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Many other high street brands also operate as franchises. For example, high-street favourites Subway, Costa Coffee and Mcdonald's are all franchise businesses.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

The Benefits Of Franchising

If you want to move into the world of self-employment and running your own business then a franchise is a smart move.

The biggest positive about owning and running a franchise business is the existing infrastructure and support that is in place.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Branding & Visibility

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

One of the biggest challenges when starting a new business is visibility and brand awareness. Customers don’t know who you are, what you do or if they can trust your brand.

That’s not the case with franchising with an established brand. Aspects such as a strong logo, branding and company message are all taken care of. Customer familiarity with the brand and visibility are also already in place and you can sell your
            services based on an existing strong reputation.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Running Your Business

Starting a new business can be an overwhelming process. Accounts, people management, advertising, operations - the list goes on. However, when you own a franchise many of these things are already in place.

For example; when a new franchisee joins WIBN they are supported from the very start.

You receive coaching and training on running a small business and how to operate networking groups.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

A Great Team

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 30px;">

Working for yourself, especially if you’re used to working as part of a large team can be a little isolating.

Not, so with franchising. As well as receiving support from head office, you also become part of an inclusive team of franchisees who continuously offer support to each other and share ideas.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

The Best Of Both Worlds

Franchising combines the autonomy and freedom of running your own business with the support of a team.

Take control of your career by building your open path and making choices that really benefit you. It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut when you work for someone else and the opportunities don’t always appear.

Deciding your own working hours and holidays is by far the biggest reason that most people become self-employed. No more missed parents’ evenings or denied holiday requests. You can prioritise the things that are important to you.

You also receive all of the benefits of your hard work. You can build your business and improve your quality of life.

        <div class "br-spacer" style="padding-top: 15px;">

Published Author

The book is aimed at those that are thinking of going through a separation and divorce. It deals with both the legal side and also explains how to take care of your emotions.

The book has a number of exercises that can help. It’s a really simple and easy book to read. It is to be used as a guide, gives tips and explains what you can expect, how to choose a solicitor, what orders the court can make, how the finances
                and children matters are dealt with etc.

What's It All About?

I wrote the book with a Divorce Coach (Margaret Yates). This was the first book for both of us. We wanted to write a book that not only deals with the legal side and explains the law but also explains how a person who is going through a separation
                or divorce can deal with the stress, take care of their emotions etc.

Law books focus on the law and we wanted to focus on both the law and emotions as divorce can be very stressful and a difficult time for many.

Published Author

This book was born out of a blog I wrote many years ago when networking heavily during my early consultancy days.

Listening to many businesses, I realised that solopreneurs are often presented with an abundance of generous marketing advice and offers, but they also have limited time and resources to wade through and work out where to focus their efforts.

What's It All About?

The more I talked to people, the more I understood how confusing the world of marketing is to anyone not working in it daily, and I realised there was a need for more than my little blog. My aim with this book was to demystify marketing, converting
                my 30 years (yikes!) of marketing experience into a concise and practical guide to marketing planning.

S.T.A.R.T. Marketing for Success guides the reader through my S.T.A.R.T. planning model, which is a simple step by step approach that structures your marketing thinking to set you off in the right direction. Jargon free and packed full of
                common sense tools, it includes a useful downloadable workbook for your own planning - so that you can build a solid and achievable marketing plan.

How WIBN Has Helped Me

I have tried many networking groups in the past and just over a year ago, after a networking “break”, I decided to start networking again. I was looking for a “tribe” to join - i.e. a group of like minded people who get what it’s like to run
                a business and everything that goes with that (including the home juggling).

I joined WIBN just under a year ago and have throughly enjoyed getting to know this network of genuinely supportive intelligent professional women. What an inspiring tribe! I have not only been lucky to gain some business, but have also been
                able to refer some of my existing clients to other services that I can’t provide (which makes me look pretty good too!). I have just renewed my membership, so need I say more!

You can buy Lisa's book HERE

What first drew you to starting your business?

I always thought I understood myself, but then came a time when I needed a coach to help me find the right direction, with what was then, a small styling business. During coaching I had to really investigate me, and low and behold (lightbulb
                moment) I found out who I was and where all my past experiences were taking me, EUREKA!

                I finally found my personal brand that included all my past, my personality, my issues, and my passions.

                I'm a lover of music theatre, food, colour and dogs. A housework hater but love interior design and sorting out. I don't do politics, religion or drama on social media. I believe in fairness, respect and loyalty, Compassion (this is where the helping
                comes in) and creativity are 2 of my strengths! I can't spell and filling in forms of any sort, panics me.

                So how does that make a brand?

                Knowing these things about yourself and how to put them over are the key to having a successful Personal Brand that people; like, trust and then buy into. Once I'd discovered how powerful that could be, I did the same for others

What is the best thing about being your own boss?

What I love most about my work is that breakthrough moment – the literal Goosebumps moment – when the (metaphorical) clouds part and my client gets that crystal clear clarity about their business, knowing who they are, what they stand for,
                who they serve – and how to attract their ideal clients.

What's your advice to other women going into business?

I sat down in my 50’s and looked at my past career path, which has been a winding pathway, like lots of other peoples, but I wanted to examine it to see if there was a common thread, I had read somewhere that this was a great thing to do,
                I now encourage all my clients to do the same.

Figure out what you love, what you are good at and start from there.

What is your top tip for success?

What if I told you that no-one knows who you are until you’ve found, written and told your brand story".

Only when you are clear about who you are and what you do will you really connect with clients.

Tell us something about yourself we might not expect?

I was a registered nurse in my previous career.

Susie Kaye, owner of Your HR Partner

What first drew you to starting your business?

I had worked in the field of HR and Employment law for over ten years at the time, culminating in a high profile role in the City, managing a large team. I loved my job, but wanted a little more flexibility around my young children. I had completed two postgraduate qualifications and became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). I felt that there was a need for HR and Employment law advice in many organisations and I had the skillset to fill it. It felt like the time was right to set up a business on my own.

What is the best thing about being your own boss/your current role?

When my children were younger the flexibility was enormously valuable - I could work in the evenings if I needed to, for example if they were ill during the day. I also had control of my diary and could help on a school trip once in a while. We work with a range of organisations and I love the variety of work and making a difference to employers and employees across many different companies, schools and charties. We advise Directors and Managers on their staff issues as well as drafting Contracts of Employment and Staff handbooks. We also hear Disciplinary and Grievance appeals and advise on Restructuring and Redundancies. No two days are the same!

What's your advice to other women going into business/entering your career?

It may feel scary walking away from secure employment so make sure you have saved some money to pay the rent/mortgage for a good few months. You may have to adapt your lifestyle for a while. However the benefits are enormous. You’ll probably work harder than ever, but you’ll reap the rewards in the long term as it is your business.

What is your top tip for success?

You need to be quite self-disciplined about time for work and time for rest as you could easily work all the hours. Believe in yourself and make a plan - don’t expect to see results quickly, but have faith that your hard work will pay off. Review your goals regularly to check that you’re still on track and whether your plan needs revising. Ask for feedback to better understand your client’s needs.

Tell us something about yourself we might not expect?

I lived in the Middle East for a year studying, volunteering and teaching English to Ethiopian immigrants.
