To celebrate International Women's Day 2022 we are shining a light on our fabulous members and their stories.

Each and every single one of them has an inspiring story about starting their own business. So read on to find out more.

Lynn Higginson-Carter , owner of Ginger Top Recruitment

What first drew you to starting your business?

I used to work in Financial Services but always knew I wanted to run my own business and do something completely different but had no idea what I wanted to do!

Fortunately, I managed to get a job as a Team Leader working for a Call Centre in the Automotive industry. This was my building block for stepping into the world of Recruitment.

I had often wondered about working in the Recruitment industry and always felt I could do a better job than most. The service was often “sloppy,” and the Consultants were very “pushy” and thought I would bring something fresh to the party.

After a few failed applications, I finally got an opportunity to work for a large Recruitment Company called Select Appointments where I received excellent training and support. I then went onto work for a couple of independent Agencies, so I had as much exposure to the industry as possible. The sales targets were ridiculously high, but I became the Top Consultant in my last job and worked there for 8.5 years which is unheard of in Recruitment!

Sadly, my Stepfather passed away and when my Manager refused to pay me for time off for his funeral, I decided to turn this negative into a positive by using some inheritance to go it alone! That was 3 years ago, and I have not looked back since

What is the best thing about being your own boss?

The flexibility on all levels is amazing! I can manage my hours, to fit around me. If I need to do work in the evening because I have had other commitments in the day, then so be it!

I can sit at my desk and cuddle my cats! I can have the TV on in the background and I can take a rest at any time if my concentration is suffering, and I need to re-energise.

It also enables me to take physical exercise during the day which helps with mental well-being.

What's your advice to other women going into business/entering your career?

Make sure you are entering a business that you are enthusiastic about. I have always loved helping people, so I have the dream job.

It is always worth researching your competitors!

Joining a Networking Group like WIBN is highly recommended, not just to gain more business but for the emotional support and friendships you gain through your group.

What is your top tip for success?

Treat people as you would like to be treated. When you are talking to people, put yourself in their shoes and communicate to them as you would like to be communicated to.

Be kind and honest and never be pushy and forthright!

Tell us something about yourself we might not expect?

I am a qualified Nail Technician so could also offer Manicures and Pedicures to my Candidates andClients if I wanted to add a spin on my Recruitment Services!
