PERSONAL STYLING TIPS: THE IMPORTANCE OF STYLE IN THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD

Posted By Stefania Bartolomei, 09 October 2023

We’ve heard the saying that people have just 7 seconds to make a great first impression, but does this mean that our style is the only thing people are taking in?

Whether you are meeting with a client at a coffee shop, heading into the office, or hosting an online webinar, your professional style is one that is quickly taken in. As a professional, you want to feel and look a certain way (without giving up your own personal style), so you can make that first impression count in all the right ways.

As a personal stylist, I know the importance of style when it comes to confidence, but is it also an important part of our professional lives? Can style hinder or accelerate our professional careers? In some ways, I think style can be an additional way to showcase our personalities and the professionalism we hold.

How can confidence impact your career?

One of the most satisfying parts of my business is seeing how confident my clients feel after having a personal styling session with me. They finally understand the ways to dress themselves that complement their personality, their body, and their skintone. It takes away the stress of dressing each morning, unsure what goes with what, and why certain outfits feel fantastic, while others not quite so.

Adding onto this, creating an effective plan that works for your morning routine can drastically reduce the stress of morning “what to wear”-itis. Here are some essentials that I recommend to help you plan for style success when going to the office.

Having a professional style that works for you will boost your confidence each day, helping you hold your head higher in the office. Whether you love a colourful suit, play with the casual/professional stylings from a blazer, or gravitate towards dresses, when you know your style you can confidently dress each day without the additional worries we put on ourselves to “look a certain way”. With this confidence you may feel more comfortable sharing your ideas in the office, showing up for additional tasks, or even feeling that boost to ask for the promotion that has become available!

It’s amazing what confidence can do for you across professional and personal worlds, and with the right wardrobe this can be one way to do that.

How can the right styling help you get recognition in your role?

Have you ever been to an office and thought “these people are all so well dressed”? Perhaps you’ve been to another country where everyone seems to just have an elevated sense of style? When you have the styling right in the office, you will be noticed in all the right ways. Not only is your calm confidence brought to the forefront, you are also able to shine in all the right ways – taking the right attention onto your role.

While style can’t make you better at your job, it can make you more recognised by the powers that be. Turning up feeling more confident, comfortable, and ready to take on anything the day gives you can be gifted to you just from changing that morning routine from stressful to confident.

I work with many professionals who are unsure how to dress uniquely for the office. They don’t want to lose their personal style, but they don’t want to be unprofessional. There are ways to tap into our personalities to stay unique, while remaining professional and appropriate for their professional lifestyles. The right styling in this way can help you feel more comfortable with the recognitions you deserve.

How to find your own professional style

When I work with my clients in a Colour and Style Clinic, one of the most important elements is understanding their personal style and then finding out all about the ways in which they need to dress. For example, if you work in law office, your professional style will be more tailored and corporate versus those who work in a tech start up who may have more freedom of expression. This isn’t to say you can’t express yourself!

If you want more professional style inspiration, and how to create your own professional style, click here to download my FREE Guide to Professional Styling.

When we know what the requirements of our professional lives are, we can then play with the ways in which to create our professional style. Elements from our personal style can be brought in such as colour, statement pieces, accessories, without pushing the envelope too far.

It’s important to feel confident, comfortable, and appropriately professional – and if you are unsure on how to create a professional wardrobe that delivers this, you’re not alone.

Launching Your Podcast Successfully: A step-by-step guide

Posted By Rachael Botfield, Podcast Manager, 04 October 2023

Let’s dive into the art of launching your podcast successfully. Whether you're ready to launch or still in the planning stages, this episode is packed with valuable insights and tips to make your podcast launch a memorable one.

Preparing for Your Podcast

Launch Launching a podcast isn't as simple as hitting the record button and hoping for the best. It requires careful planning and a well-executed marketing strategy. Here's a breakdown of the steps you need to take:

1. Plan Your Marketing Campaign

If you're ready to launch, start by setting a launch date. Then, work backwards to plan your marketing campaign. I recommend dedicating at least two to four weeks to this phase. During this time, ensure that you have your episodes pre-recorded and ready to go.

2. Create Engaging Social Media Content

To build anticipation, craft a variety of social media posts, including audiograms, video clips, and trailers. If you're comfortable on camera, consider recording a video or going live on platforms like Instagram or Facebook. Utilize tools like Canva for easy graphic design to enhance your podcast's branding.

3. Schedule Your Posts

Efficiency is key. Schedule your social media posts in advance using platforms like Meta Business Suite (Instagram & Facebook), Buffer, or now LinkedIn has the cool feature of scheduling directly in the platform, making it super easy to tag your guests in a post. This ensures your content is consistently shared with your audience. Note that Meta Business Suite allows for mentions, making it a handy choice.

4. Utilise Your Email List

If you have an email list, don't forget to use it. Keep your audience informed by teasing them with trailers and sharing information about your upcoming podcast. The more you communicate, the more excitement you'll generate. Set up a waitlist of interest for your podcast. This will generate a list full of people who would love to listen to your podcast when it launches. You can then develop a newsletter based on this list to let them know whenever a new episode is released.

5. Promote All Episodes

If you're launching with multiple episodes, remember to promote all of them. It's easy to get caught up in the weekly promotion of new episodes and forget the ones that have already launched. Tease clips from all episodes during your pre-launch promotion to ensure they all get attention. I actually made this mistake with my podcast! That’s why having all your social posts planned out is key!

Launch Strategies

Now, let's discuss two popular launch strategies:

1. Launch with a Trailer and Multiple Episodes

This strategy involves releasing a trailer as a teaser before the launch, followed by three or four episodes. The idea is to give listeners a chance to binge-listen right from the start, solidifying your audience.

PRO TIP:

Having a trailer launched is also a great way to get your podcast registered across the podcast apps. Some apps like Apple have a 10-day approval process so if you’ve never published anything you can’t guarantee your episodes will be available if you do it on the day. It also makes things so much easier to connect all the apps as you only need to copy your RSS feed from your host platform and copy it across to the others.

2. Launch with a Trailer and One Episode

Alternatively, you can start with a trailer and one episode. This was my approach to my first podcast (The Virtually Inspiring Podcast). I didn’t know much about any specific podcast launch strategies at the time, so I went with my gut!

The choice between these strategies depends on your content, schedule, and audience.

Adding Some Excitement

Looking for a fun way to add excitement to your podcast launch? Consider hosting a virtual launch party. Invite your audience to join in, either in a Facebook group or through an Eventbrite link. It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with your listeners and create a buzz around your podcast.

Stay Engaged with Your Audience

Lastly, engagement is key. Continuously interact with your audience through comments, DMs, and emails. If they reach out to you, make sure you reach back. Building and nurturing these connections will help keep your audience engaged and invested in your podcast.

That’s a wrap on the blog.

If you have questions or topics you'd like me to cover, reach out to me at rachael@rb-va.com or connect with me on LinkedIn. I host the Podcasting 101 with Rachael podcast, I cover topics like how to launch a podcast, and how to record.

I also feature brilliant female podcast hosts or industry experts to offer real insight into the podcast space.

The Importance of Protection

Posted By Emma Dance, Mortgage Advisor, 02 October 2023

The Importance of Protection (not that type of protection)

Everybody knows that life has a funny way of turning out differently to how we expect it to. When faced with the unpredictable twists and turns of fate, it is comforting to have the support of the right protection policy for your needs.

Rising bills reinforce need for protection

With rising household bills, as well as soaring mortgage and rent costs, protection is more important than ever right now. It is vital that you consider whether you would you be able to afford your monthly outgoings if your family were to lose the income of the primary earner.

Consideration of the protection that will give you the right level of support is an essential part of long-term financial planning. That’s because protection provides an indispensable safety net for you and your family against any unexpected downturns in your financial situation.

Longer-term mindset

At a time when many households are already struggling to cover rising costs, it is worrying that an increasing number of people are abandoning their personal insurance (Source Feuell4Life)

It may seem tempting to save a few pounds a month by cancelling or holding off a new protection policy. But there is a risk that, should the worst-case scenario unfortunately strike, you will be left in a difficult financial position.

It is worth remembering too that, as well as leaving you and your loved ones without essential cover, if you cancel your protection now then take out a new policy in the future, it will more likely than not end up costing you more, since premiums are calculated based on your age and health condition.

So, what protection do I need?

The exact balance of protection will vary from person to person, and family to family. Two of the most important types to consider are:

Income protection is a financial safety net that provides you with a tax-free income if you are unable to work due to injury or illness. At the end of your chosen deferred period, income protection steps in to make sure you and your loved ones don’t suffer undue financial hardship, allowing you to maintain normality and the same standard of living at a turbulent time.

Life insurance is a crucial safety net designed to protect your loved ones in case the worst happens. Sadly, many families would find themselves running short of money very quickly if the main breadwinner were to die unexpectedly. Life insurance removes this stress at an upsetting time.

Protection is for life

Having the right protection in place provides certainty in the most challenging times. If you are thinking about changing or cancelling your policy, don’t act in haste. Contact us today to see how we can help.

As with all insurance policies, conditions and exclusions will apply - Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage1. 1.

PERSONAL SHOPPER TIPS: GUIDE TO PLANNING YOUR SEASONAL SHOPPING

Posted By Stefania Bartolomei, 26 September 2023

As a new season is welcomed, this may mean you need to head to the shops to get essentials for your wardrobe. Seasonal shopping is something many of us do as our wardrobes require a refresh, past pieces no longer serve us, or we want a new piece to love for the season!

While this can be fun for many, heading to the shops can also mean expensive trips that may not result in the most economical results. I am all for shopping, but shopping effectively is where my passion lies.

With sustainability so important for our environment, investing in pieces that last for years rather than one season, is something we all need to be mindful of. With that in mind, if you want to add new pieces to your wardrobe for the new season, here is my guide to seasonal shopping and how to make the best use of your budget.

Know your budget

Talking of budget, this is one of the most important things to know when you go shopping at any time of year. Understanding what you want to invest in your wardrobe during the shopping trip, whether in person or online, will help you navigate the shopping experience. It will also remove any feelings of guilt that can come from an overspend when shopping (you’re not alone if you feel this!), and make it a more enjoyable experience.

Know your wardrobe requirements

Something I always start with when having a Personal Shopping experience with any of my clients is understanding what they already have in their wardrobes. Once we know what we already have, we can then get to see what we may want or need to add to them.

For example, if you have plenty of beautiful summer dresses that you want to use into the Autumn and Winter, you may need to invest in hosiery, long-sleeved tops to go under the dress, or even thermal vests that cannot be seen but keep you warm. Other pieces may be cardigans, jumpers, or long-sleeved dresses for the cooler months. Whereas if you are going into Spring/Summer you may need lighter options like a bolero, linens, and undergarments for comfort when not wearing tights.

Go through your wardrobe as the seasons begin to change, so you can clear out any unwearable garments for the coming season, and look at outfit opportunities within what you already have, and where the holes may lie.

Play with trends (that suit your style!)

I love new trends for each season, but sometimes we can get excited about a trend that truly won’t serve our personal style. We end up buying trendy garments, that we wear once and never again. Knowing the trends that you feel will work within your wardrobe and personal style will mean they can be worn over and over, and taken into future years – because they work for your style.

Invest in the seasonal essentials

Depending on the new season you are welcoming, there are some essentials you will need for your wardrobe. For Autumn, for example, there are some pieces you’ll want to add to your wardrobe if you haven’t already got them from the previous year.

Consider the place you live, and these essentials may change. For example, in the UK, while we may welcome Summer with open arms, this doesn’t mean our jumpers, tights, and boots need to go into storage! Whereas in Italy, we tend to only keep a few light layers in our wardrobe for the summer for cooler evenings.

Play with the seasonal colours

With a new season comes seasonal colours – Autumn with its falling leaves, Spring with new blossoms, Summer with strong colours all around, and Winter with it’s bright and fresh colourings. These colours can inspire your seasonal shopping. Pick and choose from your colour wheel to add colours from the season ahead to create new outfits with just a change of colour. For example, as we approach Autumn you may want to add reds or deep hues through your accessories. Find some beautiful boots that are in the season’s colours, that also keep you warmer on the cooler days.

If you are going shopping for the new season, I hope this guide has helped to prepare you. If you want someone there to support you and guide you through the shopping process, please get in touch.

How to stop worrying about what people think of you.

Posted By Christine Maragkakis, Owner, 21 September 2023

I speak with so many women who are more worried about what someone else thinks of them rather than what they do.

I think this is very sad

And I ask them why do you care what someone else thinks of you or how you live your life?

I mean, think about it. Why would you want to give someone else that much power over your life?

When you put it like that, it seems crazy doesn't it.

Yet we all do it to some extent. We do it because we are historically programmed to seek approval from our pack. If we didn't fit in, we would struggle to find food or enjoy the protection of our community. But we are not prehistoric mankind anymore.

We can buy our own food, and we can protect ourselves, so we need to question why, if it's no longer valid, we are still choosing to do it.

Fear is the answer

Fear of being different, fear of being ridiculed ,fear of being abandoned, fear of not being good enough or pretty enough, or clever enough.

So, to drown out the fear, we consume.

We have the nice house, the new car, the expensive holidays, the latest gadget, the trendy clothes but they're all very nice for a while but they never quite satisfy that emptiness that starts to show up time and time again.

So we consume some more, we spend hours on social media so we know the minutia of everyone's lives, we post and wait for the likes to appear to validate our possessions, habits and workstyles. But even here, we are seeking approval because if we say something out of the normal, the keyboard warriors will attack. This constant seesaw of consuming and fear is responsible for the growing mental health issues that the world is facing.

And if you are young and growing up surrounded by this insane pressure to be sanctioned, the chances of you breaking free and realising your full potential are slim. The more you give of yourself, they more they will take.

These people are not faceless

They are your friends, colleagues, family, and peers, and some of them will love you very much, but they have been conditioned to judge and undermine because that is how society has been designed.

The thing is, it's not their approval that we need. It's ours.

The only person that you have to impress is yourself. How to stop worrying about what people think of you When we are authentic and know our worth, what other people think of us is far less important. Obviously, we still want to be liked, but we don't like everyone, so it's a bit unrealistic to expect everyone to like us.

Some people will dislike us because they don't know us, or because to them we seem to have more than them or because we challenge their world view or because they don't like anyone much and that's pretty sad.

The thing is, it's not your job to change their opinion.

  • It's your job to be true to yourself.
  • It's your job to be the best version of you that you can be.
  • It's your job to leave the world a better place than you found it.
  • It's your job to be happy and fulfilled, compassionate, and kind and to be better today than you were the day before.

Our ego is a construct that has been formed since birth through watching how others behave and listening to what is said. It then puts us at the centre of all that information and devises a way for us to try and get what we think we want all the time and it really doesn't like it when we don't get what we think we should have.

This results in our behaviour and how we interact with others. We may have been told we are amazing all our lives, and so we have grown up with a sense of self-worth, confidence, and by result resilience.

Or we may have grown up being made to feel that we were never good enough or that good things never happen to people like us or that bad things will happen if we don't behave on a certain way.

This is not true

This is conditioning. It doesn't matter what you look like, where you live, how much stuff you have.

What matters is knowing your strengths so that you can play to them. Identifying your weaknesses so that you can mitigate them, understanding why you make the choices that you make and think the way you do because once you start on the path of self discovery, you will come to understand that you are a spiritual being having a human experience, that by focusing on the way you think, behave and act so that you can challenge and change what is not bringing you success and joy is the only way to make you feel whole and that what other people think of you is their business not yours and you shouldn't interfere in it.

All that energy that was previously wasted on trying to get other people's approval, can now be used to help you grow. When you hear a negative thought in your head, use your energy wisely.

Don't allow it to trigger you and send you on an emotional roller coaster.

Stop, be mindful.

Is any of the thought true?

  • Do you actually believe this thought, or can you hear other people saying it ?
  • Does this thought make you happy?
  • How does it make you act?
  • What if you didn't believe this thought?
  • How would your life be?

In this way, you can stop being triggered by past thoughts and events and you can start to see a glimpse of the beautiful being behind the conditioning. The real you. The one that has so much to offer this world if you would just let go of the fear and open yourself up to the truth of the potential you carry within.

And each time you go through this process, a little of the fear recedes and a bit more of who you really are becomes apparent and the more you get to know yourself and understand what you are capable of, the less you will need everyone else's approval.

I mean ask yourself, what is the worst thing that can happen if you dye your hair wear the outfit that makes you feel like you, come out, disagree with someone, express yourself?

If you would like to know more about how you can free yourself from fear and be true to yourself, then please get in touch.

Chris.

The Power of 3

Posted By Sally Inkster, Brand Specialist, 13 September 2023

Who has the number 3 as their favourite number?

What is so magical about the number 3?

It appears so many times in our childhood...

  • The Three Little Pigs

  • The Three Musketeers

  • Three Wise Men

  • Macbeth's three witches

  • Three wishes in Aladdin with the lamp

It ultimately comes down to how we as humans process information. We recognise patterns and 3 is the lowest number that you can have a pattern - quite basic really!

Patterns in neuroscience are defined as paradigms or in other words habits

These habits are what lead our behaviour and therefore give us some of our Personal Brand. We should at least be aware of them so that we have control over our Brand.

'A Paradigm is defined as a mental program that has almost exclusive control over our habitual behaviour and almost all of our behaviour is habitual' Bob Proctor

These paradigms rule our lives, they are like installed software programs that are stored in our subconscious minds, so much so that we are not even aware of them.

It makes sense that we should understand what some of these are and then in turn use them to our advantage

I use 3's in my daily life all the time

It's how I prioritise my to-do list!

This is my favourite way...

  1. A - Urgent and Important

  2. B - Important but not urgent

  3. C - Can be left until urgent or important

How about this

There are 3 Types of people –

  1. Makes things happen

  2. Watch things happen

  3. “Oh, what just happened?”

By the way - Which one are you?  (Which one you are could have a big bearing on your Personal Brand.

Other 3's I would recommend.

  • 3 colours for a website 2 dominant colours and a highlight

  • 3 words for a tagline, mine is Finding Brand YOU!

  • 3 words for people to remember, Hands, Face, Space

  • 3 packages for your offers - Bronze, Silver, Gold

  • 3 sections when you're getting dressed in balance

  • 3 flowers in a vase

Defining your personal brand is important and I would suggest if you're doing any kind of marketing, then urgent!

My system for defining your personal brand... Oh! guess what? the system is based on 3 sections-

  1. Philosophy - who you are, what makes you tick, how your brain works

  2. Physicality - What you are,  your style, body shape and balance, colours and loads more

  3. Phenomenon - of your business, what it is, what it does, how it's seen and how it shows up

I can help YOU

Why not book a FREE session today  My 'Sky Rocket Your Business Through Being You' A Personal Brand Clarity Session'.

In this session, you will leave with...

  • A three-step plan to increase your visibility by being you.😉

  • A crystal clear vision of who you want to be seen as.

  • A next step plan to attract your ideal client/customers through your Personal Brand.

You will leave feeling renewed, re-energised and inspired - Does this sound as if it could be of value to you?

Get Discovered on LinkedIn as a Keynote Speaker

Posted By Elaine Walsh-McGrath, Managing Director, 13 September 2023

When you are taking a break from your business do you promise yourself that you’ll stay switched off while you’re on holidays?

✅ Me too.

Do you schedule your posts, and delete the social media apps from your phone?

✅ Yeah I do too.

Turn on the out of office notification?

✅ Yep, me too.

But then maybe after a week do you just allow yourself to check one thing?

🙋‍♀️ Confession time…I did.

Now in my defence. We had returned home from Wexford where I ran around the forest with Síofra looking for the Gruffalo, swam in the sea, ate chips at the arcade, held a bunny at the petting farm… your typical Irish family holiday.

So bags being unpacked… back home… I jumped on the WiFi, and hit download on the LinkedIn App.

I know, technically I was still on holiday! But I couldn’t help myself!

A message popped up from Ben from DigiMarCon. Inviting me to speak at the Dublin Conference. Being the cynic that I am, I had to check if it was legit, so I googled it and sure enough it was listed as one of the top digital conferences to attend.

So I said YES. And so on the 4th September only a couple of weeks later I presented my keynote presentation "I'm not Sarah Connor, But Human Nature not BOTs = Content that Converts." to a room full of digital marketers, agencies and tech companies.

Now that’s the short version of this tale! The part one. Of course, outfits had to be bought, presentations put together, the wonderfulNamrata Vijayakar - Brand Design Specialist designed a new logo for me, rebranded my colour scheme and then I had to practise it all while looking after Síofra and getting everything ready for her new school year!

Not to mention calming my nerves, overcoming my self doubt, and worrying about whether my presentation was good enough but doing it anyway!

Because I have over 50,000 hours of experience in marketing. I’ve pitched to some of the biggest companies in the world.

So what did I have to be nervous about?!! (But I was!) It’s human nature, I guess.

So why am I telling you this?

Well it occurred to me that on the 11th August I didn’t have “Keynote Speaker” in my LinkedIn Headline. I had listed the fact thatI will help you Land More Clients with Clear Messaging and Content, that I’m a LinkedIn Expert, and that I can help you with your Digital and Social Media Strategy.

So that means that it was my experience, credibility and authority that drew the organisers of DigiMarCon’s attention to my LinkedIn profile. It helped me get found, known and achieve this opportunity.Which will undoubtedly lead to a growth in my visibility and further success in my business.

So forget the digital part. Does that sound like an opportunity that you’d enjoy?

  • Is speaking on someone else’s platform something that you would like to do?
  • To get up on a stage and speak to a room full of potential buyers or people who could refer you and recommend you?

And if you’re thinking yes, then what’s stopping you?

If you have the authority and credibility in your field of expertise, then you could do it. Butyou’ve got to be found first.

Here is what you have to do:

1. Demonstrate your authority in your area of expertise on LinkedIn. Positioning yourself as a thought leader by sharing relevant content both that you create, in the form of articles and posts, and also by sharing relevant third party content with your opinion.

2. Make sure that it is clear in your profile that you are an expert in your field. Put key words relating to the subject that you would like to present on, in your LinkedIn Headline (Title) Share how many years of experience that you have in the field.

3. List the relevant experience that you have from the years of work that you have or the qualifications that you have that demonstrates you are a leading expert.

4. Ensure that you are producing content that is engaging and shows that you can speak to your subject matter. Share videos. Be open to featuring on podcasts, LinkedIn Live interviews or LinkedIn Audio Events.

If today you’re thinking that you’re not sure that it would be strong enough to attract the right people to get you in the right rooms then that’s ok. Because if you have the expertise, the credibility, the authority then everything else can be created, step by step.

Returning to the office – top tips for styling success

Posted By Stefania Bartolomei, 11 September 2023

This week I was getting ready for heading back to my London studio, as my son is going back to school, and I realised the stress that dressing for work can bring.

Getting back into the swing of heading to the office, going to meetings (whether online or in person) can be a difficult start to the day. Even if you’re not going to the office every day, you may be heading to more meetings or attending more online meetings, meaning your dresscode may be changing back to more professional looks.

This can mean being unsure what to wear! With the changing of the season adding an added concern for outfit styling, I have compiled this guide to help you have confidence when dressing for work.

Check the weather forecast

The seasons always change in London, no matter the time of year! I have seen many professionals get caught out by wearing summer dresses and being welcomed by a downpour, while others have brought layers for a cool Autumn day and hit by 30 degree weather (as we had at the beginning of September).

One way to make sure your outfit will complement the expected weather conditions is by checking your weather app. With the knowledge of rain to come, or a heatwave, I can plan my outfit to accommodate. This saves so much stress in the morning (and during the day if a downpour comes, but I have made sure to pack my umbrella and coat).

You can then utilise the fabrics and layers to reflect the expectations of the day. For example, adding a leather jacket if it’s going to be cooler, or adding sandals instead of boots for a warmer day. For some inspiration for summer outfits, check out my blog, while the weather is still hot outside, these may help you plan some beautiful looks for going back to work.

Plan your outfits in advance

Avoid the morning let downs of not knowing what to wear, misfitting pieces or outfit problems by planning your outfits the night before (or if you’re super organised, why not try a few days or the for the full week?).

Getting your outfits together can look like simply laying them out on the bed and knowing what to put together, or why not make it a pick up and go by adding everything together on a hanger? You can put accessories, layers and the full outfit all in one spot so you can get up in the morning, reach for the outfit, and know it works beautifully together.

If the thought of planning outfits causes you more concern than joy, I can help you by creating an easy to use personal style board, which is part of our Colour and Style Clinic. Click here to find out more.

Invest in key pieces for the new season

Every season requires a few essentials. Making sure you have them at the ready as you welcome a new change in the season will help you to prepare and plan for your outfits without any stress. Autumn usually welcomes cooler climates, so layers, jackets, and tights will now be needed (on most days!), so make sure all of last year’s pieces all still fit, work for your style needs and if they need washing, tailoring or to be donated.

Making sure you have pieces that you love to wear, and feel great in, are so important for day to day, and in particular when you are going to meetings and heading to work. Understanding the styles, outfits, and looks that you feel best in will help make you walk taller and feel more confident every day, making dressing for work a little easier.

To find a few of my autumn essentials, I have shared my top five in this blog.

If you are going back to work after the summer holidays, I hope these tips help you feel more confident. However, if you are unsure where to start with styling, colours, and what to wear for your professional life, I’d love to help.

Have you ever wondered where your belief and behaviours have come from?

Posted By Steph Grainger, Therapeutic Mentor, 07 September 2023

Have you ever wondered where your belief and behaviours have come from?

We do the things we do for a reason and if we can understand why, we can then look at how we’re going to change them if they’re not helping us anymore.

Let’s start by looking at how we form our beliefs which then lead to behaviours.

Have you ever seen the Pixar movie, Inside Out? It is a great movie for both kids and adults alike, and it beautifully shows you how beliefs and behaviours are created and why we respond to the ways we do to certain things.

Research has shown us that in the first seven years of a child’s life, a whole chunk of core beliefs and behaviours are formed. Those early years are extremely formative, because we are little sponges that are taking in all the things that are going on all around us from people that we care about, and those people that are in a position of influence – our parents, caregivers, guardians, grandparents, older siblings, teachers, family, friends, group leaders etc etc.

We look up to them both physically and metaphorically as children, and we’re continuously noticing and absorbing behaviours of those around us and the way that those people are functioning in the world. This is more commonly known as conditioning.

I want you to just think for a moment of a belief that you hold strongly, a belief that could be either working for you or it could be really unhelpful for you in your life, and you’ll know that this is a strongly held belief because when somebody does something to question or compromise that belief, you’ll resist, and you will stand firm.

In some cases, you may find it very difficult to see a world without that belief in it and maybe can’t even understand why everybody doesn’t believe what you believe.

“Why does everyone feel this way?

Surely everyone should feel the same way about this?”

Let me share a personal example with you.

Timekeeping.

I was taught from a very early age that being late to something is completely unacceptable, and that it’s hugely disrespectful. So, when I would find myself late for reasons out of my control, I hate it!

For those of you that share the same belief, imagine you are stuck in traffic, you are supposed to be somewhere and you aren’t going to get there in time; you may notice that you have this horrible, uncomfortable feeling in your body that goes into your mind, even though it was unavoidable and it wasn’t your fault. It’s going to feel very uncomfortable.

My dad ground this into me and my siblings. You just don’t be late. In fact, we are the family that gets to the airport four hours early just in case something unavoidable comes along.

Just in case.

Now, this belief personally doesn’t affect my life in a negative way. I am happy to live this way. It’s something I can’t ever see me wanting to change. I also know that if I’m with somebody that is notorious at being late, I have to work on my own dialogue because that’s their story, not mine.

My husband’s family aren’t the best timekeepers in comparison to mine, and I’ve had to work on not taking it personally, because that noise in my head saying “It’s disrespectful if you show up late” is mine, so I rarely get offended, because it’s nothing to do with me. It’s a difference of beliefs and behaviours.

Beliefs are not set in stone.

They aren’t fact, and you’re not born with them. The only thing that we are born with as human beings is the fear of being on our own. A belief is simply a repeated statement or behaviour that we’ve witnessed and heard over a regular and reoccurring period of time, to the point that we form that belief as our own.

We didn’t make a conscious decision to do it. It was an unconscious choice, and when we know this, we can become aware of the beliefs that are holding us back and why they’re preventing us from achieving our goals.

Knowledge is power.

If we unconsciously adopted these beliefs, we absolutely can un-adopt them if we decide that they’re not helping us and holding us back. Think about the beliefs that you have in your life that are currently holding you back and start to ponder on the origin of them, where do you think they came from?

Whose voice do you hear in your head when you are holding firm on one of your beliefs?

The good news is we don’t have to be aware of where they originated from. We don’t have to know where or why you behave in a certain way to create change.

Once you recognize that these beliefs and behaviours aren’t serving you any longer or helping you to move forward in your life in a way that you desire, you can create the changes you want to see in your life.

I want you to start by getting curious as to how your life would look if you believed things to be different or behaved in a different way.

If you change that pattern of behaviour, what would it look like? How would life be better for you? How could life look different for you if you changed your beliefs and behaved in different ways?

I will be going deeper into this subject as well as other subjects, on my upcoming one day workshop 'Pause & Reconnect' in Chelmsford, Essex on Tuesday 26th September and in Bishops Stortford, Herts 10th October.
